The Mountaintop
MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY – April 3, 1968, at the Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee – One Day before Dr. King died. The premonition is evident in his eyes, in his sweat, in his words. Death threats, injunctions, prison could not stop him from seeing through what so many people believed. I watch this every MLK day dating back to when I was a teacher. I wanted the kids to see his power, his fear, his strength, his hope, and how he endured, even while knowing it was not going to end well – for him anyway.
Please watch and read what I believe are his final public words.
“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead, but it really doesn’t matter with me now because I’ve been to the mountaintop. I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I am not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And he’s allowed me to go up to the mountain, and I’ve looked over and seen The Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to The Promised Land. So I am happy tonight I’m not worried about anything. I am not fearing any man. My eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. “
